Simple linear model of neuronal death. A simple linear pathway connecting stress transduced through an increase in the probability of entering a cell cycle to DNA replication and, in the embryo, directly to neuronal death. In the mature adult neuron, the linkage to cell death is interrupted (question marks) and the cell can maintain a hyperploid genetic content and survive for months if not years.
